On La Réunion, in the heart of the Indian Ocean, maloya was born: a raw, percussive dance music rooted in the songs of enslaved people on sugarcane plantations, blending African, Malagasy and Indian influences. Once banned, it is now recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Danyèl Waro is the devoted ambassador of this trance-inducing music. With his powerful, high-pitched voice and the rhythm of the kayamb, he sings in Creole about love and death, but also injustice, racism and identity. Poet, rebel and cultural icon, Waro embodies the soul of Maloya.
